If you have been in our office lately, you may have noticed a small device on the counter and a client walking out with a thick, colorful report. That is the Cell Wellbeing hair scan, and it is one of the questions we get asked about most.
Here is the plain English version of what it is, what happens during the appointment, what shows up in your report, and (just as important) what a hair scan cannot tell you.
The short answer
A Cell Wellbeing hair scan is a non invasive wellness assessment that uses four hair root bulbs to produce a personalized nutrition and lifestyle report. It takes about 30 minutes in our Daytona Beach office. No blood draw, no needles, no fasting.
The result is a 35 page document called the Optimize Wellness Report, plus a 90 day food and lifestyle plan built around what the report flags for you specifically.
It is a wellness and nutrition optimization tool. It is not a medical test, and it does not diagnose anything. More on that below, because we think it is the most important part of the conversation.
Why hair?
Hair is one of the few tissues you can sample without breaking the skin, and the part that matters here is not the strand. It is the bulb at the root.
The hair bulb sits in an actively dividing, well supplied part of the follicle, and it grows continuously. That growth is why the sample reflects a recent window of time rather than your whole life history. Cell Wellbeing, the company behind the technology, frames the reading around a roughly 90 day window, which is why they recommend rescanning quarterly rather than monthly.
One clarification we make constantly: this is not a DNA test. Nothing in the process sequences your genes, and no genetic result comes back. The framing is epigenetic, meaning it is about the signals and environmental inputs around cellular function rather than the underlying genetic code you were born with.
What happens during your appointment
The appointment itself is short and undramatic.
- We take the sample. Four hairs are plucked from the back of the head (the occipital area). The root bulb has to come with it, so the hair needs to be pulled rather than cut. If you have very short hair or no hair, talk to us first, because we may need to use a different area.
- The sample is read by the S-Drive. This is the desktop device that digitizes information from the hair bulbs.
- The data goes out for processing. It is encrypted and sent to Cell Wellbeing’s technology center in Hamburg, Germany, where their algorithms map more than 800 indicators against the sample. Your name and address are not attached during processing.
- The report comes back in about 15 minutes. We review it with you rather than handing you a PDF and sending you on your way, because a 35 page report is a lot to interpret alone.
Total time in the chair is around 30 minutes. It has to be done in person, since we need a fresh root sample.
What the Optimize Wellness Report actually covers
The report is organized into sections rather than a single score. Broadly, it covers:
- Nutritional indicators. Vitamins, minerals, amino acids, antioxidants, and essential fatty acids, presented as areas of higher or lower indicated need.
- Food and additive lists. Foods to prioritize for the next 90 days and foods or additives to reduce.
- Environmental and resistance indicators. Including toxin and EMF exposure factors that the system flags as worth addressing.
- Gut, immune, and circulatory support. Nutritional and lifestyle inputs associated with each.
- A 90 day plan. The practical part: what to add, what to pull back on, and how to structure it over a quarter.
The value is in the plan, not the page count. A list of indicators does nothing on its own. What changes outcomes is a specific, ordered set of changes you can actually keep up with for three months.
What a hair scan is not
We would rather set expectations correctly than oversell this, so here is the honest boundary.
A Cell Wellbeing hair scan is not:
- A diagnostic test. It does not diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease or condition, and none of the statements around it have been evaluated by the FDA. Cell Wellbeing says this plainly in their own materials, and so do we.
- A blood or lab test. It does not measure the level of a nutrient in your blood. If you need a serum vitamin D level, an iron panel, or thyroid labs, those are separate tests, and we offer diagnostic lab testing for exactly that reason.
- An allergy test. The food lists are not IgE allergy results. If you suspect a true food allergy, that needs a proper allergy workup.
- A replacement for your doctor. It is an input to a wellness plan, not a substitute for medical care or for anything your physician has prescribed.
Used the way it is intended, as a structured, personalized starting point for a 90 day nutrition and lifestyle reset, it is genuinely useful. Used as a diagnosis, it is the wrong tool.
Who tends to book one
The people who get the most out of a hair scan are usually the ones who are already trying. They are eating reasonably well, taking a cabinet full of supplements, and still feel like something is off, but they do not know where to start and do not want to guess.
It also works well for people who want a non invasive first step. If bloodwork feels like a big commitment, or you are simply not ready for it, a hair scan is a low friction way to get a personalized plan on paper and start somewhere.
Frequently asked questions
Does it hurt? Four hairs, plucked once. Most people describe it as a quick pinch and nothing more.
How long do results take? The report comes back in about 15 minutes, so you leave the same appointment with it.
Do I need to fast or stop supplements first? No fasting is required. Come as you are and mention anything you are currently taking so we can factor it into the plan.
Can I do it if I color or treat my hair? Yes. The sample is the root bulb, not the length of the strand.
How often should I rescan? The system is built around a 90 day cycle, so a follow up scan after you have worked the plan for a quarter is the usual rhythm.
Is it covered by insurance? No. It is a wellness service, not a billable medical test.
